For employees across the UK, reporting suspicious emails to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has never been easier.
In an effort to help workers stem the growing tide of malicious emails, the UK’s NCSC has introduced a one-click solution for employees to flag suspicious messages and send them directly to the centre’s Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS). Clicking the button will also report the email to the company’s IT team.
After having received a scam email report, the automated service will “process emails and take down previously unseen malicious content where found.”
Earlier today, the NCSC has published a guide on how IT administrators can add the new button to Outlook on Microsoft Office 365 suites across their organizations.
“This simple technical innovation could enable millions more people to join our mission to stop scam emails from ever reaching UK inboxes,” says NCSC technical director Dr Ian Levy.
“The good news is that you can help protect your workplace by forwarding suspected scam emails to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service from your work email account at the click of a button.”
While the one-click report button is a brand new solution, the email reporting service itself has been in operation since April 2020. Previously, the public could manually forward suspicious emails to the SERS.
According to the NCSC, the SERS has received over 6.5 million malicious email reports from users since its launch, and more than 97,000 scam URLs have been removed as a result.
Unfortunately, the button is not currently available to Microsoft Office 365 users with home or student licences and is only supported by corporate or business versions of the Office 365 suite.
