UScellular, one of the major wireless carriers in the US, sent breach notification letters to its customers informing them of the data breach it experienced in December 2021.

The mobile carrier said its billing system was hacked, and unauthorized individuals gained access to customer accounts that contained personal information, such as phone numbers and addresses.

The incident occurred on 13 December 2021 and affected 405 customers.

“Information in customer accounts include name, address, PIN code and cellular telephone number(s) as well as information about wireless services including service plan, usage and billing statements,” it said in a notification letter. Bleeping Computer was the first to report on the issue.

Sensitive personal information, such as social security numbers and credit card numbers, is masked within the billing system, and the company has ‘no indication that there has been unauthorized access to your UScellular online user account.’

“We immediately disconnected the computer accessed by the unauthorized individual from the internet and requested immediate removal from the internet of the fraudulent websites used by fraudsters as part of the scheme. We also reset the login credentials for impacted employees, and we changed your and your Authorized Contacts’ PIN and security question/answer,” the company said.
