Belarusian hacktivist group Cyber-Partisans said it infected the railroad system amid escalating tensions in the region on Monday.
“We encrypted some of BR’s (Belarusian Railroads) servers, databases, and workstations to disrupt its operations. Automation and security systems were NOT affected to avoid emergency situations,” the group tweeted on Monday.
Cyber-Partisans said that the attack against the system is aimed to stop the Russian Troops from entering Belarus ahead of the possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Hacktivists promised to back down if certain conditions were met.
“We have encryption keys, and we are ready to return Belarusian Railroad’s systems to normal mode. Our conditions: Release of the 50 political prisoners who are most in need of medical assistance. Preventing the presence of Russian troops on the territory of #Belarus,” Cyber-Partisans said.
The Belarus Railroads announced that some trains would be late. ArsTechnica reported that several services on the railway’s website, such as online ticket purchases, were unavailable when their post went live on Monday.
